BETA ENGINEERING/JESS GERN SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
An outstanding student in the Department of Communication and Theatre. Student must be a junior majoring in Communication or Theatre with a 3.0 or better GPA.

Provided by:
Bob Austin, President of Beta Engineering Company in Austin, Texas. Bob is an alumnus of Western State College, who established this endowment fund to honor Dr. Jess Gern, then Chairman of the Arts and Humanities Department, and to show his appreciation to the College.

COPE/CHEVRON SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
English majors at Western State College who have full junior or senior standing and who have completed or are currently completing two full years as a student of a modern language other than English.

Provided by:
Dr. John Cope, Sr., long-time employee of Chevron Corporation and father of John Q. Cope, Associate Professor emeritus of English at Western State College.

FAIR, SCHOLARSHIP IN MODERN LANGUAGES

Available to:
Colorado Resident and US citizen. Declared Foreign language major preferred or a minor with strong interest in studies of other cultures. Awards will be awarded to incoming Freshman who demonstrates a strong interest in and an aptitude for foreign languages. Balance of awards given to students who obtained at least Sophomore standing. Must have 3.0 GPA or better and demonstrate financial need. Scholarship may be renewable. Cultural diversity shall be valued in making award decisions.

Dr. Jeane Fair, Professor of Modern Languages from 1948-65, in memory of her parents.

GERHARDT, CHARLES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Applicants for the Charles J. Gerhardt Memorial Scholarship must be full time, junior or senior level sudents majoring in either Art or English and must be maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.  The award will alternate every year between an Art and English major.

Provided by:
Family and friends to honor the memory of one of Western's most outstanding students and to perpetuate his name as a symbol to other young men and women of outstanding achievement.

Scholarship Selection Committee of the Department of Art and Music or Scholarship Selection Committee of the Department of Communication Arts, Language and Literature.

HALEY, GLEN W. & BORLAND, DR. LOIS, ENGLISH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Upper division English majors who have maintained a 3.0 GPA. Recipient must be dedicated to and have demonstrated exceptional ability in some genre of creating writing, including, but not necessarily limited to: fiction, literary non-fiction, poetry, playwriting (as judged by the English Department faculty).

MITCHELL, VALERIE ANN MEMORIAL ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full time students majoring in English who have earned a 3.5 GPA in a minimum of 75 semester hours. Students should also be able to demonstrate the highest standards of personal conduct, leadership within the division, academic achievement, and potential for service to mankind.

An anonymous donor to perpetuate among contemporary young people the memory of Valerie Ann Mitchell, who was an outstanding example of performance in scholarship and citizenship.
