Gunnison Area/GHS graduates


COLEMAN, PAUL JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Colorado residents who are Gunnison High School graduates. Must be full-time WSC student and have maintained a 3.2 GPA or greater as a GHS graduate, or a 3.0 GPA as a WSC student.

Provided by:
Mirta M. Coleman, Julia Cockrill and Hazel Dickey, Ed.D.

Amount:
Award depends on funds available (approximately $750).

Application:
Complete and submit The Paul Coleman, Jr. Scholarship application which is available in the Office of Financial Aid (Taylor Hall, L2 Suite) and in the Gunnison High School Counseling Office. A teacher recommendation form and a one page essay will be needed to complete the application. Deadline is April 1.


CUMMINS, D. H. AND MILDRED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Available to:
Gunnison High School graduate majoring in business, chemistry or history at Western State College. Students must be prepared to demonstrate financial need, a positive attitude and academic ability.
 
Provided by:
Dr. D.H. Cummins, Professor of History and Dean of Academic Affairs at Western State College, in memory of his wife, Mildred, who taught in the Gunnison Public Schools. In addition, contributions to the scholarship have been made by family and friends in memory of both D.H. and Mildred Cummins.
 
Amount:
Award depends on funds available.

Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application. Narrative should demonstrate financial need, positive attitude and academic ability.
  



DOLEZAL, GARY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Men and women from high school seniors to college seniors. Must have been involved in scouting program and attained rank of First Class Scout; must be a graduate of a Western Slope high school. Gunnison High School graduates who meet the criteria will be given first preference.
 
Provided by:
Family to perpetuate the memory of Gary Dolezal, who was an example of scouting, citizenship, and scholarship.

GLOVER, WHITNEY CHANTAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Incoming freshmen in good academic standing from Gunnison High School. Students should have a 3.0 GPA minimum, but 2.5 will be considered if there are special circumstances.  Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in working with children during high school as well as intend to pursue a career working directly with children. Preference given to females.

GUNNISON ENERGY PLRM SCHOLARSHIP FOR GUNNISON VALLEY


Available to:
Full-time students that are graduates of high schools in the Gunnison Valley and have been accepted in the PLRM program. Financial need may be considered. Students must be a Freshman or seeking an Additional Bachelors Degree.

Provided by:
Gunnison Energy Corporation.

Amount:
2 awards of $2500 each.

GUNNISON WATERSHED SCHOLARSHIPS

Available to:
Gunnison High School graduates who attain a high level of academic achievement and who have exhibited strong leadership traits through student government, athletics and other activities.
 
Provided by:
Gunnison Watershed District.
 
Amount:
Award depends on funds available.
 
Application:
Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application. Narrative must include information about activities involved in during high school years and high school GPA.
 
Other: Recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA at Western during first session in order to qualify for second payment.

KIWANIS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

Applications available through local Kiwanis clubs. Gunnison High Students should contact their high school counselor.

 



PHELPS, ETHEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Female graduates of Gunnison High School who are enrolled full-time at Western.  Must demonstrate both academic promise and financial need and maintain academic eligibility with a GPA of 2.0 or greater.
 
Provided by:
Mr. And Mrs. Robert Beitler and matched by a gift from Chevron.
 
Amount:
Award depends on funds available.

RE/MAX COMMUNITY BROKERS SCHOLARSHIPS

Available to:
Gunnison High School or Crested Butte graduates who are full-time, high need and demonstrate a strong desire to continue his/her education and succeed professionally.
 
Provided by:
RE/MAX Community Brokers.
 
Amount:
Award depends on funds available (Anticipated award $500).
 
Application:
Complete and submit Western's Common Scholarship Application.  Narrative must include information regarding the strong desire to continue his/her education and succeed professionally.
 
Other: Recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA at Western during first session in order to qualify for renewing scholarship. 
 

ROTARY CLUB OF GUNNISON SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Graduating seniors of Gunnison High School who are planning to attend Western State College during the next academic year. Applicants will be evaluated on academic and/or athletic achievement, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to community service.

SAN JUAN MINING SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Incoming Freshmen who are graduates of Gunnison High School (current WSC students are NOT eligible). Students must enroll full-time at Western State College.  Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be able to show financial need.

SAPP, DEXTER T. SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Available to:
Must have resided in Gunnison County for at least 12 consecutive months. Applicant must be of good sound moral character. Financial need will be considered. 
 
Provided by:
A bequest by Reva Sapp O'Connor, daughter of the early-day Gunnison attorney and Colorado State Senator who played a prominent part in promoting the establishment in 1901 of the Colorado State Normal School, which was to become Western State College.
