The following are general scholarships (non-departmental) that are available to any current Western student.
 

THE LT. F. SCOT CRISMON MEMORIAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
A student in each academic department who is full-time, carrying at least 15 semester hours. Must have earned a 3.5 GPA in a minimum of 30 semester hours at Western; must have demonstrated leadership abilities.

Provided by:
Family to perpetuate the memory of Western State College alumnus Lt. F. Scot Crismon, Navy fighter pilot who served aboard the attack carrier USS Hancock during the Vietnam conflict.

Amount:
This prestigious award provides a generous stipend.

GOODMAN, DONALD A. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Student hired as an RA who has demonstrated financial need.

KENNY, BRENDA GAIL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full-time Western students with a minimum GPA of 3.00. Have both academic promise and be in need of financial assistance. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of the Costello or Kenny families.
 
Provided by:
Rob and Mary Costello to celebrate the memory of Mary's sister Gail "76".

KJOSNESS, OLAF C. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full-time Western students with a minimum 3.2 GPA. Must be able to demonstrate leadership abilities and high personal character.
 
Provided by:
Dr. Kjosness, former Dean of Students, who filled the position of "father figure" and mentor to hundreds of Western students, personally subsidizing students from his own finances. The scholarship he established when he retired and a memorial fund established by family and friends have been combined to honor and perpetuate his memory.

LUFTSEBEN-TKD SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full-time students with Junior and Senior status. Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Students must demonstrate leadership qualities which predict future success in service to his/her college community or country. A student may exhibit these qualities by participating as an officer of the student body, or of a WSC club, or as a captain of a sports team.
 
Provided by:
Donations from past, present and future members of these organizations.

MUSGRAVE, FRANK A. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full-time student at Western State College with demonstrated financial need. GPA of 3.0 or higher required.

The parents of Frank A. Musgrave, a former Western student, to perpetuate his memory and affection for Western State College.

O'LEARY, MARGARET WHITE SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Students who have earned 45 credit hours at Western State College with a cumulative GPA of 3.5.
 
Provided by:
Mrs. O'Leary, Mrs. Hattie Steel and women's clubs in Gunnison and Western Colorado. The fund had its beginnings in 1912 when the College was a Normal School to educate teachers.

ORAHOOD, ERNEST-OTERO J.C. & WESTERN STATE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Otero Jr. College graduates transferring to Western State. Must be a full-time student and have financial need, with a minimum of 30 credit hours. Math or Science majors with a 3.0 or higher preferred but not required.
 
Provided by:
Ernest Orahood who attended Western State College from 1936-1940, on very limited resources. This scholarship is made in appreciation of his experiences at Western and to help other needy students.

Full-time students with unique or unforeseen situations that hinder a student's ability to attend Western State College.

Full-time student at Western State College with demonstrated financial need and high academic achievement.

QUEAL, MORGAN L. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full-time student at Western State College with demonstrated financial need who embody the spirit and values of Morgan L. Queal (see below). Preference given to students studying a Liberal Arts field such as History, Political Science, Literature, Writing or Art.

Other:
Morgan was a journalist, and small business owner before attending college.  She graduated from WSC in 1987 at the age of 52 and graduated from Law School two years later.  She served as an attorney for the Navajo Nation and later entered private practice.  Per Calvin Queal, "Morgan had a special feeling for the poor, the disadvantaged, the persecuted and abused. She scorned sham and pretension, and firmly believed in the causes of justice and fairness.  We trust recipients of this scholarship will follow her example."
 
 

RICHARDS, JAMES R. SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full-time students who demonstrate both academic promise and financial need. Maintain academic eligibility with a GPA of 2.0 or greater.

SODEXO CAMPUS SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Full-time student with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA with at least 30 credit hours at Western State College and with evidence of successful participation in co-curricular aspects of college and community life. Preference may be given to students who have successfully met the additional demands of a job while attending college and who are not receiving other college aid.

THORNTON ASSISTANCE SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:
Any student that has a unique or unforeseen situation or considerable financial need.

The estate of Jessie Thornton.

Application:
Submit a written essay describing the unique or unforeseen situation or the considerable financial need. WEBSTER, HELEN MAE MEMORIAL FUND AWARD

Available to:
Juniors who have demonstrated high scholarship, character and participation in school activities.

The mother of Helen Mae Webster.

WHITING, VERN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Available to:
Full-time students majoring in Business, Accounting or Economics. Students must be junior or senior standing and must demonstrate financial need.  Students must have exhibited a work ethic that has assisted in financing their education.  Preference given to non-traditional students.

Vern's wife, Nell, and family and friends.

Amount:
$250.

WSC PRESIDENTIAL HONORS SCHOLARSHIPS


Available to:
Full-time students with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Involvement in the WSC Honors Program as well as campus activities and/or community service (whole student development, including athletics). Preference given to students who have considerable financial need, intent to become teachers, are a minority or non-traditional student.

Jack and Marilyn MacAllister Foundation.

Amount:
Eight $2500.00 awards (2 freshman, 2 sophomore, 2 juniors, 2 seniors).
