Wilderness Pursuits: Level 1 Avalanche Course (Not for Credit)
January 27-29: This 2-1/2 day course taught by Crested Butte Mountain Guides will take you through a decision-making process to help you decide where, how and when to travel in the backcountry. Cost: $225; payment due on registration. This course cannot be taken for credit.

In this course, you will be introduced to avalanche hazards and have both classroom as well as hands-on field experience to help you better manage your backcountry travel. You will learn the basics of how to recognize avalanche hazards, how to manage and minimize risk, and how to respond in case of an emergency. You can expect to gain an understanding of safe travel in a winter environment, what sorts of hazards to watch for, and the various pressures that weigh on the decision-making process.
You are responsible for travel to and from the course location, as well as for food and equipment. Half-price equipment rentals are available for this course through Wilderness Pursuits.
