In addition to Ship Breaker, Paolo Bacigalupi is the author of The Windup Girl and Pump Six and Other Stories. His writings have appeared in High Country News, Salon.com, The Magazine of Fantasy an Science Fiction, and Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine. His short stories and fiction have been nominated for numerous awards. The Windup Girl was named by Time Magazine as one of the ten best novels of 2009 and also won the prestigious Hugo award from the World Science Fiction Society. Ship Breaker was a National Book Award finalist and received the 2011 American Library Association's Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. In Ship Breaker, set in America's Gulf Coast region where grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts. Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota--and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it's worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead him to a better life.
