Summer Teacher Institute - 6.9.08
The Teacher Institute provides opportunities for K-12 educators to enhance content knowledge, share pedagogy, and network with educators from throughout Colorado and beyond. This past summer we had 170 teachers on-campus for the Institute. The Teacher Institute offers a variety of content courses, taught by Western faculty, designed specifically for K-12 educators who want to enrich their existing curricula. The Institute is scheduled for June 9 -21, 2008 with classes ranging from 1-3 credits. The Ann D. Zugelder Summer Teacher Institute Endowment for Excellence helps make this program possible. San Juan Mining Tour - 6.23.08
A breathtaking tour of the great San Juan mining country with emphasis on Lake City, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, and Durango. Visit and learn about one of Colorado’s most storied mining regions. Ride on the famous Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railroad, tour the Bachelor-Syracuse mine, and stay at some of the most famous historic hotels in Colorado. The class will cross Red Mountain, Owl Creek, Slumgullion, and Ophir Passes, and visit several historic mining museums. The mining frontier, narrow gauge railroads, geography, unique Victorian architecture, geology, and social history will be emphasized. The tour also includes a Melodrama at the Diamond Circle Theatre in Durango and a visit to the Box Canyon in Ouray. COURSE COSTS: $600 tentative price (includes course fee, travel, lodging, ticket on the Durango-Silverton Railroad, Melodrama, and all tours and museums). Does not include food and personal expenses. Additional Course Fee: Academic Credit: $200 - 2 hours of semester credit, History 397 or Graduate Credit Ed 589, are offered for an additional $200 PROFESSORS : Dr. Duane Vandenbusche has taught at Western State College since 1962 as a professor of history. He teaches classes in Colorado History and History of the Gunnison Country. Dr. Bruce Bartleson taught Geology at Western State College for 33 years from 1965-1998, and is now a professor emeritus. Western State College Computer Camp - 6.23.08
The Math and Computer Science Departments offer a camp for high school students to learn about math, physics, and programming by creating 3-D virtual worlds. Details at http://western.edu/computerscience/computer_camp.html
Concert: WSC-Colorado Brass Band - 6.27.08
The WSC-Colorado Brass Band, directed by Steve Asheim, will present a Friday evening concert to close their week of rehearsals. All are invited to attend this free outdoor concert. Bring a blanket or chair but some chairs will also be provided.
Concert: Colorado Symphony Orchestra - 7.16.08
