Anthropology Student Research Opportunities
Western's Anthropology faculty are active in field research. They have obtained numerous grants for funding their fieldwork and for purchasing state-of-the-art field equipment.
Western's students learn to use this equipment in the field to collect data and then analyze and report the results of their investigations. Some student support is available through these professors' research grants. Work-study opportunities in anthropology are plentiful.
Anthropology students can submit proposals for competitive funding through the Western State College Foundation, the Alice Hamilton Scholarship (Colorado Archaeological Society), and the Ward F.Weakly Memorial Fund (Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists).
Anthropology students can also participate in the Thornton Biology Research Grants program through collaborative projects. One Thorton interdisciplinary project was the Gunnison Basin Paleoenvironmental Research Project, during which Western students, along with archaeologists, geologists, and biologists, researched the environment of the Gunnison Basin over the last 10,000 years.
