What it is…Chemistry is the study of the principles that govern matter and the chemical transformations of matter. It appeals to students that question matter in their own world; for example, how a plastic can be bullet-proof and flexible. Students will analyze atomic and molecular structure, properties of matter, chemical reactions and spectroscopy.
Special Features …Western’s curriculum emphasizes theoretical aspects as well as practical experimental skills in areas of inorganic, organic, biochemistry, analytical and physical chemistry. All students have access to small classroom labs and cutting edge technology- last year alone the department spent $90,000 on new equipment. The size of the department also allows for interaction with other departments including biology, physics and environmental studies. Advanced students are required to participate in research projects with faculty.

“The classes are small and the professors are very personal and flexible--they are here to help
students succeed. It is one big happy family and the possibilities are endless!”
