Welcome to western.edu!
If you are a student looking for a private college experience at an affordable cost, we are pleased to introduce you to Western. For more than a century, Western has been a bit of a secret, tucked away in the Rockies, quietly producing graduates who go on to change the world.
Western grad and undersea explorer Barry Clifford, class of 1969, has just discovered what is likely Christopher Columbus' missing ship, the Santa Maria. Class of 1999 graduate Sasha Rearick used his Western degree in Kinesiology to become the head coach of the U.S. Men's Ski Team in the Sochi Olympics. Chance Chase is using his 2010 degree in Professional Land and Resource Management to improve how his energy company responsibly extracts natural gas. These are just a few examples of the thousands of Mountaineers who have gone on to launch global businesses, become neurosurgeons, teach children, compete as Olympians and so much more.
Western offers an intimate, customized educational experience on a campus of just 2,400 students. More than 90 percent of our faculty hold the highest degrees available in their fields of study. Students and professors know each other on a first-name basis. Our average class size is just 17 students.
Three key attributes define the Western experience: our special bonds, our environment and our value. Exercise & Sport Science student Ali Wolpern works side by side with Dr. Lance Dalleck to conduct research on athletes at Western's High Altitude Performance Laboratory. She has constant access to Dr. Dalleck as he helps customize her education and provides feedback along the way. That special bond also exists between students. Mountaineers leave Western with a huge family of close friends they develop as part of our robust and diverse student life. With more than 50 clubs and organizations on campus, Western students don't have to compete with throngs of others to be officers in student government, have a show on the campus radio station or travel to New York to represent Western in the National Model United Nations. Western students learn in a hands-on environment where academics are enhanced by our Rocky Mountain location and small classes. Whether they're heading into the field to study Petroleum Geology, interning at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, or building a business plan for a local retailer, Western's one-of-a-kind location is a huge plus. And this excellent education comes at the best value in Colorado. While the cost of higher education has soared 1,120% during the past 30 years, Western offers one of the lowest tuition rates in the state. And the value continues long after college, with a close alumni network and a dedicated Career Services team that helps launch graduates into successful careers.
