Recreation Center / Multipurpose Fieldhouse Design Begun
Sink Combs Dethlefs Architects out of Denver were selected to design the new Recreation Center/Fieldhouse building along with J.E. Dunn Construction out of Colorado Springs.
The new building is currently in schematic design and covers over 120,000 square feet. The new structure will contain a full 200 meter 8-lane track, long jump and pole vault, with three multipurpose courts in the center. The design will also include a new High Altitude Performance Laboratory, 5,000 square feet of new fitness equipment and 6,000 square feet of activities and exercise rooms. Additions to the Paul Wright Gym include new offices for track and football coaches and staff, new team rooms, and a new weight room.
Student voting and initiatives led to the inclusion of a new 3,000 square foot 54 foot tall climbing tower, a 400 square foot training foam pit with trampoline, and a hot tub addition to the existing natatorium.
The Shavano Apartment Complex will be demolished in 2012 to make way for the new building.
Designs are underway for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified project.
Construction is set to begin June of 2012 and finish in the spring of 2014.
