  • Other Services

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE OF MAIN CAMPUS

The main campus at WSC consists of around 40 acres of irrigated and maintained landscape. The water supply for the irrigation system at Western is provided by the Gunnison Ditch Authority. This supply is a non-potable water source from the Gunnison River. We control and monitor our irrigation with a Rainbird Maxicom computer control system, which helps with efficiency.

During the peak of the season there are 15-20 full time, part time, seasonal, and Student employees that maintain the Grounds at WSC. The maintenance consists of mowing, trimming, irrigation repair, trash pickup, tree and shrub care, among other duties.

ATHLETIC FIELDS MAINTENANCE

The 23 acres of athletic fields at WSC are comprised of the soccer field, Crismon Practice Field, Gateway Lacrosse and Rugby Fields, the football practice field, and the Mountaineer Bowl. The ryegrass/bluegrass turf is maintained at a height of 1 inch on the main practice and playing fields during the seasons of play, and painted and marked to NCAA rules and specifications.

SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL

The Grounds Department is responsible for snow and ice removal on 3.4 miles of sidewalk, 1.8 miles of paved streets, and 18 acres of parking lots. The objective is to provide a safe walking and driving surface for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to WSC.

OTHER SERVICES

Other services provided by the Grounds Department include, but are not limited to, parking lot and street maintenance, painting and maintenance of the W and W Mountain, classroom and office moves, setup for special events, among other duties.
