Scholarships

Below are scholarships for which Environment & Sustainability students may be eligible in addition to the wide range of scholarships administered by the Office of Financial Aid .

MAHAFFEY ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP

One award may be made each year to a full-time  Environment & Sustainability major who has demonstrated community involvement with environmental solutions, academic excellence and a dedication to mountain environments which could encompass recreational activity, personal connection, or service.

Amount: One $1,100 scholarship, disbursed over two semesters.
 
Selected by: Environment and Sustainability Council
 
Application: There is no application process for this scholarship. The Environment and Sustainability Council selects a recipient from the entire pool of ENVS majors.

MIKE MARTIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

One award may be made each year to a full-time, Colorado native,  Environment & Sustainability major from Crested Butte, Gunnison, or elsewhere in Colorado in honor of Mike Martin, Crested Butte environmentalist and recreation enthusiast. Eligibility Criteria: Full-time enrollment status, having grown up in Crested Butte, Gunnison, or elsewhere in Colorado (applications will be ranked according to this order); GPA of 3.0 or higher. 

Provided by: The Michael Martin Community Fund.

Amount: One $500 scholarship, disbursed over two semesters.

Selected by: Environment & Sustainability Council

Application: Complete and submit the ENVS Scholarship Application Form to the ENVS Director (jsellen@western.edu), Kelley Hall 108, by April 15. Recipient will be notified by e-mail and is expected to be present at the Spring Symposium when the award is announced.

JAMES D. NAUMAN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP - ENTERING FRESHMEN

Awarded each year to an applicant who has been accepted for admission to Western with a declared interest in pursuing a degree in Environment & Sustainability. Preference will be given to entering first year students with financial need; however, other first time students may be considered. 

Provided by: Dr. James Nauman, who attended Western from 1945-49.

Amount: One $400.00 scholarship, disbursed over two semesters.

Application: Complete and submit the ENVS Scholarship Application Form to the ENVS Director (jsellen@western.edu), Kelley Hall 108, by April 15. Recipient will be notified by mail or e-mail.

JAMES D. NAUMAN ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

One award may be made each year to a full-time Environment & Sustainability major in recognition of his or her contribution towards environmental stewardship while at Western. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement and consistent progress towards completion of the Environment & Sustainability major.

Provided by: Dr. James Nauman, who attended Western from 1945-49.

Amount: One $400.00 scholarship, disbursed over two semesters.

JOSEPH A. KASTELLIC SCHOLARSHIP

Available to:  Junior level or above, full-time students who have a major in Environment & Sustainability, Geology, Environmental Biology or related fields. Preference given to students with greater financial need, resident of CO Western Slope who have expressed a career interest in park operations and\or management, or a career in earth sciences. Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Provided by: Barbara Kastellic and gift from others to honor Joseph, who was the first Superintendent of the Black Canyon National Monument from 1975-1984.

Amount: One $500 scholarship, disbursed over two semesters.

Application: Complete and submit The Joseph A. Kastellic Scholarship application which is available in the Office of Financial Aid. A recommendation and a one page essay will be needed to complete the application.
