The William E. Dorgan Memorial Math Scholarship

was awarded to Sarah Oeding.

sarah.jpgSarah will complete her teaching internship during the 2009-2010 academic year. She has been a math tutor for the department for three years. She also coaches the local high school diving team.

The scholarship honors William Dorgan, a long time Mathematics professor at Western State Colorado University. It was established by Professor Dorgan's daughter, Roberta Dorgan Beckman and her husband Dennis. Professor Dorgan came to Western in 1951, joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor. He taught at Western for thirty years, retiring as a full professor in 1980.

 

 

 

The Scholarships for Mathematical Studies

were awarded to Heather Carlson, Margaret Michalowski, and Lindsay Wiard

heather.jpgHeather is a senior and intends to graduate in December 2009 with a double major in mathematics and chemistry. After graduation she intends to apply for graduate school in either math or chemistry or education. She has worked as both a math tutor and a chemistry lab assistant. She also tutors local high school students and works as an EMT for Gunnison Valley Hospital.

 

 

 

 

  

maggie.jpgMaggie is a senior with a math major and physics minor. She is a critical part of our math center community, helping others to maintain a positive outlook on math, school, and life in general.

 

 

 

 

 

 

lindsay.jpgLindsay is a junior math major. She is from Montrose and intends to teach after graduation. During the 2009-2010 academic year she is working on a research project in non-commutivity with Dr. Bob Cohen. 

This scholarship is funded by donations each year. The number of awards is dependent on the funds available.

 

 

 

 

 

The William Charlesworth Memorial Scholarship

was awarded to Carrie Bennetts

(no photo is available) Carrie is a freshman from Buena Vista, Colorado. She will play volleyball for Western State Colorado University and intends to major in mathematics. She is a second generation Western State Colorado University student.

This scholarship was established to perpetuate the memory of William Charlesworth, a 1954 graduate of Western State Colorado University. The express purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to student-athletes pursuing majors in mathematics or related natural sciences.
