The Music Department provides opportunities for all members of the Western State College community to gain rewarding musical experience as participants in ensembles.

Bands
The Symphony Band is open to all students through audition. Throughout the academic year, the Western State College Symphony Band schedules frequent campus and community performances. The study and performance of wind literature masterpieces are emphasized.
Varsity Band performs for home football and basketball games.

Jazz Ensembles
WSC Jazz Ensembles are open to all students by audtion. Groups include the large Jazz Ensemble, "High Altitude" Dixieland Combo, and Modern Jazz Combo. Ensembles perform on campus, in the Gunnison-Crested Butte community, and at state and national jazz festivals.

Orchestra
This group performs together regularly as a string ensemble, full orchestra and a small chamber group. The WSC College-Community Orchestra and Choir combine together to perform major works.

Recitals
During the senior year, a recital is required of all music education majors. Students in the Comprehensive Program in Music and the Comprehensive Program in Music: Music-Business emphasis may elect a senior recital, special research project, music technology project, or internship. Beginning with the 2000-2001 academic year, students must complete a Senior Recital/Project registration form for Music Program records. If a student elects an internship, it may be taken for credit (MUS 499, 1-12 credits) or no credit.
