Metadata Is Data About Data

Examples of library metadata include the library catalog, indexes and menus. To find quality web sites for researching a topic, it is best to locate indexes and menus that have already been created by librarians and information specialists. Examples include the following:

Librarians' Internet Index This scholarly site lists thousands of Web pages that have been sorted into categories according to subject.

Internet Public Library The Internet Public Library is a public service organization that provides information on most subjects.

GPO Access.gov A service of the U.S. Government Printing Office that provides free electronic access to a wealth of important information products produced by the Federal Government. The information provided on this site is the official, published version and the information retrieved from GPO Access can be used without restriction, unless specifically noted.

Intute
Web resources for education and research. The service is provided by a network of UK universities and partners. Online tutorials are available for finding Web resources for most student research projects in a wide variety of subjects.

Project Gutenberg There are over 20,000 free books in the Project Gutenberg Online Book Catalog. A grand total of over 100,000 titles is available at Project Gutenberg Partners, Affiliates and Resources.

Directory of Open Access Journals There are now 3275 journals in the directory. Currently 1062 journals are searchable at the article level. As of March 17, 2008, 174,131 articles are included in the DOAJ service. Some of the articles are submitted by graduate students and may not be considered to have a high enough degree of authority to be used in a research paper. Note: For information on the differences between magazines and journals, see http://journvalsvsmagazines.wikispaces.com and try out the activity at the end of the page.
