Search Engines

Search engines are large databases that index every word or most words on Web pages. Remember: you are not searching the entire Web, just the search engine database fixed in time.

  • Google - for searching help, see the Google Cheat Sheet
  • Google Scholar - search for "scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports."
  • Vivisimo

Meta-Search Engines

These tools search the databases of multiple search engines simultaneously.

General Subject Directories

Directories group Web sites by categories. Some directories also function as search engines.

Specialized Subject Directories

These directories include sites selected according to specific criteria. They feature annotations or site reviews.
