Faculty Senate Meeting 12-6-2010
State budget projections indicate some additional tightening will be required next year. If cuts must be made, the expectation is that they will come from someplace other than higher education.
There wasn’t anything controversial in last Monday’s meeting. All new curriculum proposals for the 2011/12 year were approved…the first time in anyone’s memory that this has been accomplished prior to Christmas. Notable changes include a new Publishing Certificate that will be offered. It is a graduate level certificate in publishing (18 credit hours?). WSC is one of a handful of schools nation-wide that offer a graduate certificate in publishing.
Maria Struble reported on the work of the Sustainability Action Committee for this semester. The activities of the committee have included providing funding for Headwaters, the Straw Bale Conference speaker, Paul Edward’s COTH student play Sustainability, recycling initiatives…including more containers at sports events, advocating the use of locally produced food by Sudexo, the composting tub in the College Center, Maya Nut speaker, Philosophy Intersection’s “What is Sustainability?” program, among others. Maria encouraged the senate to offer suggestions for initiatives the Sustainability Action Committee could support in the spring semester. The efforts of the Sustainability Action Committee are aimed at achieving the goals of WSC’s President’s Climate Commitment of reducing utility usage and greenhouse gas emissions 20% by the year 2020, and to work on other projects to protect the environment and achieve sustainable resource use.
