Thesis Preparation Process for MFA Candidates

All MFA students write a thesis in the course of their second year in the program, which is printed and archived in Western's Savage Library on campus. At this point, the university does not retain any electronic copies of MFA theses.

To submit your thesis as part of your degree requirements, please carefully follow the process outlined below. If you have any questions, direct them first to your advisor and concentration director, and then to the library.

1) By May 15, Concentration Directors send the library a list of the students writing a thesis that year.

2) By June 1, the library sends out instructions to all thesis students on how to format and submit their theses. The library collects all the thesis files and serves as the main point of contact for this process.

3) By July 1, students send their completed thesis files to the library, including all signed permissions forms. The library handles all questions about thesis permissions, printing and archiving.

Thesis Binding Costs: Two bound copies of each thesis are added to the Leslie J. Savage Library, one to the University Archives and the second to the library’s circulating collection. Each student pays $50 ($25/copy) to Extended Studies to cover the cost of printing and binding the thesis. Theses with extensive color images may incur an additional cost. Students who wish to have the library print and bind extra copies may contact the library director to arrange this. The cost is $25 per extra bound copy, paid directly to the library in this case.

4) On or about July 10, The library delivers the signature pages to the GPCW Director, who arranges for faculty signatures during the summer residency.
