Discover the best of Gunnison Country in an exciting and interesting week-long educational adventure. Join Gunnison Country experts Dr. Duane Vandebusche and Dr. Bruce Bartleson on daily out and back explorations. Begin with an action-packed day to Crested Butte, Gothic, and Taylor Park. Next, learn about the Valley’s interesting relationship with water and the geology that created it. Then, travel back in time with a visit to the Sargents and Maysville school houses before moving onto Salida for a lesson in railroads and the Arkansas River. On Thursday, travel outside of Gunnison, over Ohio and McClure passes to learn about historic, high-altitude mining towns. Stay the night at the beautiful Redstone Lodge in Glenwood Springs. The last day includes a chairlift ride to the caves outside of Glenwood Springs, a manor tour at the Redstone Inn and a breathtaking drive over Kebler Pass back to Gunnison. The mining frontier, water, railroads, geography, geology, and social history are emphasized. You must sign up for the whole week; no partial registrations are allowed.
COURSE COSTS: $425 (includes course fee, travel, and lodging at Redstone Inn, chairlift tickets, all tours and museums). Cost does not include food and personal expenses.
PROFESSORS: Dr. Duane Vandenbusche has taught at Western State Colorado University since 1962 as a professor of history. He teaches classes in Colorado History and History of the Gunnison Country. He has written 6 books: Marble, Colorado: City of Stone; Early Days in the Gunnison Country; A Land Along the Western Slope; The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad; Lake City Branch; The Gunnison Country; and the newly released Western State College Mountain Mecca.
Dr. Bruce Bartleson taught geology at Western State Colorado University for 33 years from 1965-1997, and is now a professor emeritus. Dr. Bartleson specializes in Colorado Geology with emphasis on the Western Slope and has led numerous tours and field trips.
