Summer Academic Enrichment Camps At a Glance

Computer Camp

Session I : June 24-30. 2012
Session II: July 15-21, 2012
Open to students entering 8th or 9th grade

The goal is to convey fundamental principles of math, physics, and computer science in a fun and exciting way. You'll get individual attention from the Computer Science faculty and be assisted by Math and Computer Science college students who will help turn your ideas into reality. This camp is limited to just 12 students so that everyone will get a chance to work closely with our faculty in a college environment.

 

Camp fee is $750 which includes food and double occupancy lodging and all camp activities.

 

Boston Brass Music Camp

June 30-July 7, 2012
Open to brass players in 9th grade through college

The Western State College Music Department and the Crested Butte Music Festival offer an exciting week of rehearsals and concerts with the internationally acclaimed Boston Brass. Activities will include large and small ensemble coaching and performances, private lessons, master classes outdoor activities, and concerts.

Returning for their second year to the Gunnison Valley, Boston Brass has performed in 49 states and 21 countries around the world. For 25 years Boston Brass has established new standards in musical entertainment, from exciting classical arrangements to burning jazz standards and the best of the original brass quintet repertoire.

 

Camp fee is $695 which includes food and double occupancy lodging and all camp activities.

 

Environmental Leadership Camp

July 8-13, 2012
Open to students entering 9th -12th grades

Become a leader in finding solutions to the environmental challenges of the 21st century. Ecosystem hikes, Gunnison Community Garden project, sustainable ranching tour, and hands-on activities are part of the daily schedule. Working in the outdoors, in classrooms, and in the community, you will explore a range of topics in environmental issues. Participants learn about LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and tour buildings on campus which have achieved the highest level of sustainability certification for energy, water efficiency and materials.

By learning from Environmental Studies faculty, graduates and successful solutions in the Gunnison Valley, environmental leadership participants create an environmental action plan for their home, school and community.

Camp fee is $690 which includes food and double occupancy lodging and all camp activities.

 

Exercise and Sports Science Camp
July 15-21, 2012
Open to students ages 14-18

Are you interested in science? Do you enjoy sports? Do you have a physically active life style? Develop your mind and body at the Exercise and Sports Science Camp.

 

For five fun-filled days, students learn about a wide range of topics related to exercise science. Students have the opportunity to work in the High Altitude Performance lab and complete their very own exercise testing. Learn how to use exercise testing equipment, and understand the results The students participate in muscular strength  and endurance testing, heart rate and pedometer activities, height, weight, and BMI analysis, anearobic capacity analysis (Wingate Test), maximal exercise testing  (VO2max),and  group exercise as well as have opportunities to discuss and learn about adaptations to training, muscle fiber typing, aerobic vs. anaerobic activity, nutrition for performance and recovery, hydration, supplementation, and personal training.

 

If you’re ready to learn more about healthy diets, training for sport, and understanding how activity affects the body come be a part of Western’s Exercise Science Camp. Math Camp
July 22-28, 2012
Open to students entering 8th and 9th  grades

Mathematics Camp is a unique opportunity to explore the exciting and mind-altering world of mathematics in a way teens wouldn't normally get to experience in a typical classroom.  In a fun and challenging environment, the camp schedule includes educational, fun, and entertaining activities, field trips and games.

Camp participants challenge themselves with topics such as knot theory, cryptography, geometry, fractals, and math modeling. Students are introduced to these topics in a morning session and put this new knowledge to work in exciting afternoon hands-on activities in the outdoors and applied to the real world. Working with mathematics professors and college students, as well as, interacting with other teens who share an interest in mathematics.

 

All students entering 8th and 9th grades are invited to apply for the camp. There are also scholarships available. Preference for scholarships will be given to first generational and minority students. Registration and scholarship applications can be found at: www.western.edu/math/camp

Ultra Running Camp
July 24-29, 2012
Open to participants ages 21 and older

Train with the best at the Gunnison UltraRunning Experience; a holistic endurance training camp in beautiful Gunnison-Crested Butte, Colorado. Duncan Callihan, champion ultra runner and owner of Strategic Endurance Coaching, along with Scott Drum an adventure runner and WSC faculty member, create a training week sure to take your training to the next level.

This ultra running camp is for runners of any ability looking to improve their training and racing or just have fun learning and running with others.  Participants improve their skills while gaining new perspective and tools to become stronger runners.

 

Set in the Rocky Mountains at 7,700 feet, the campus is surrounded by U.S.F.S. and BLM lands with miles of trails to enjoy. Enjoy the spectacular scenery as you run through wooded mountains and wilderness areas, alongside streams, and overlooking expansive valleys all within a short distance from campus.

 

The camp includes sport testing (VO2max, lactate or ventilation threshold), training plan development, sport psychology techniques, massage, nutritional information for optimal performance, physical therapy evaluation, post-run recovery techniques and other expert led seminars. A daily guided  high altitude trail run at an elevation of 7,700 feet to 10, 000 feet, lets you apply what you have learned while tuning your legs for upcoming runs.

What to Bring

A complete list of what to bring will be provided in your confirmation packet.

Housing

Participants stay in double occupancy residence hall rooms on the Western State campus. Each room includes two twin beds, dresser and a set of bed linens. A shared bathroom is located near each room.  Roommate assignments can be requested at time of registration; if none are specified you will be assigned a roommate.  For participants do not need campus housing, a reduced camp fee can be arranged by contacting WSC Extended Studies.

 

What is Included

All camps include outdoor activities with Wilderness Pursuits, meals, on-campus housing, and program transportation.

 

Wilderness Pursuits Activities

Each camp includes a variety of outdoor adventures led by the Wilderness Pursuits office at Western State College. Participants explore the Gunnison area through guided activities geared for all levels of abilities. The activities include rafting, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking and vary daily based on the individual camp schedules.
