Summer 2012
This course takes place at a small organic farm near Gunnison during the peak growing season. Students are starting seeds and transplanting seedlings and developing beds for planting using organic techniques. Students learn a variety of approaches to gardening successfully at high elevations in the Rocky Mountains, including selecting appropriate crops and varieties, companion and rotation planting, amending soils, and season extension through cold frames and greenhouses.

Textbooks/Materials: Organic Gardening in Cold Climates, Sandra Perrin. $12 +$3 for seeds, soil, and pots. Required text will be available on the first day of class.
Sustainable Organizational Development
Students garner the requisite foundational skills and knowledge to organize and implement non-profit sustainable development programming. Learning modalities include site visits, case studies, guest speakers, and hands-on learning and experimentation. Topics investigated include energy, education, grant writing, tenets of sustainable development and the triple bottom line, 501(c)3 incorporation, and risk management, among others. The course culminates in a collaboratively created sustainable development strategic plan for the 350-acre prospective Gunnison Rural Sustainable Living Center.
