Aesthetics and Community in Northern Italy, Spring 2014
A 3-credit month-long study abroad course offered through Western State Colorado University’s Extended Studies program featuring Dr. Don Seastrum, Professor of Art and Dr. Paul Edwards, Professor of Communication Arts, May 20 – June 18, 2014, in Florence, Italy. This course is open to all students. There is no requirement that a student be either an Art major or Communications Theatre major. Informational Meeting Number Two: Wednesday November 13 at 6:00 pm in the University Center Board Room
Join Drs. Seastrum and Edwards on a month-long exploration of the rich cultural traditions of northern Italy.
The focus of this course will be the impact of artistic and aesthetic choices on the cultures and communities of the region and the greater impact of those choices on Western Civilization. There is no requirement for students to be either an Art major or a Communication-Theatre major to take this course. This course is open to all interested students.
The course also will take into consideration the current challenge of issues of conceptual and contextual content in the arts and humanities in a society of immediacy, where illusion and reality are not always easy to distinguish one from the other.
We will investigate how arts initiatives and movements built on the past and, in fact, appropriated from the past. We will consider art for art’s sake versus the utility of the arts, and how the tension between one’s personal relationships to the arts interacts with the political implications of artistic expression.
In addition to our residency in the beautiful and historic city of Florence, the course will include field study trips to Milan, Verona, Vicenza, Parma, San Gimignano and Siena. An optional weekend trip to Venice is also planned.
While in Florence we will be using the facilities at Santa Reparata International School of Art, Via San Gallo 53r Florence Italy.
Santa Reparata will provide lecture room facilities for the course. SISA will offer our students historic walking tours of Florence by a Florentine expert, museum cards providing entrance to all state operated museums in Florence with no additional cost to faculty and students.
The cost of this study abroad program is $4000 (not including airfare, meals and amenities.)
