A description of the Teacher Education Program at Western

Enhancing Teacher Quality

The Teacher Education Program at Western is designed to meet the diverse needs of all current and future educators. Preparing highly qualified teachers is goal number 1, but a one-size-fits-all approach rarely fits anyone well so that's not what you'll find at Western. We have numerous program offerings to meet the needs of the traditional resident student, the experienced educator and the second career professional. You are unique, so are we. Choose one of the program offerings below to learn more about how we can help you on your journey to being a great educator!

outdoor educationUndergraduate Programs - Initial Licensure

The Teacher Education Program at Western State College of Colorado is accredited by the Colorado Department of Education, and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. The Teacher Education Program currently maintains a 100% pass rate for licensing assessments for Colorado educators as reported to Title II.

The faculty of the Teacher Education Program is committed to creating a community of teachers who are competent in their subject matter, pedagogical knowledge, and teaching skills. By developing a professional knowledge base, and researching and reflecting on the connection between theory and experience, students realize that pedagogical decisions educators make hold implications that extend well beyond traditional educational goals of individual achievement. It is necessary for preservice teachers to understand and accept the responsibility for creating a community that recognizes and appreciates diversity where individual members possess the content knowledge, skills and abilities needed to think critically, solve problems, and make responsible decisions.

Graduate Programs

Graduate Programs at Western are designed to help educators meet the challenges of today’s schools and society. It embodies Western's tradition of relevant curriculum, outstanding faculty, and personal attention. Candidates learn in a hybrid format (face-to-face and online learning) combining a residency session in August followed by online course work with mentor support during the school year.
