Top O’ the World , a weekly student-run newspaper funded by the Student Government Association and independent advertising, the independent student voice for Western and the Gunnison community. Published each Wednesday, the Top plans this year to expand a web presence and develop a web edition by this Christmas. With a staff of editors, writers, layout personnel, photographers, and advertisement managers, the paper offers students both a strong voice in their campus community lives and a training-ground for future journalistic activities. As the student voice of Western State College of Colorado since 1921,Top O’the World is entirely written and produced by Western students with funding from student fees and advertising. Also, journalism credit is available for working on the paper, regardless of your major. In other words, you do not have to be a journalism major, or even a communications major to join the staff. All you have to do is apply for the staff through the editor or sign up for JOUR 245 Newspaper Production through the adviser, Phil Ward. The staff offices are located on the third floor of Taylor Hall for 2009-2010.

"Western's 'hands-on' approach in the field of journalism instruction was invaluable tome having no particular aspirations to enter this field during college. If it weren't for the ability to get heavily involved in the Top O' the World and KWSB very easity and early on, I probably never would have gravitated into this field that seems to have become my life's work."
