Communication Arts

A description of the Communication Arts Program at Western State Colorado University.

Studio TheatreThe program in Communication Arts at Western State Colorado University is designed to provide students with a quality liberal arts education. Throughout their education, students have opportunities for hands-on experience both in and out of the classroom. In students' progress toward their senior year, they have access to professional internship opportunities as well as foundation-supported grants for special projects. Upon graduation, students should be ready for specialized training in business, industry and government.

Program emphases:

Communication
The Communication Emphasis is designed for students desiring a more general, interdisciplinary approach to the fields within communication arts, providing the student the freedom to craft a more flexible standard major by choosing courses from all of the emphases offered.

Film Studies
The Film Studies Emphasis combines theoretical and applied learning in the areas of visual and audio production, and management in an effort to provide an understanding of how media play an important role in society.

Organizational Communication
The Organizational Communication emphasis studies how communication can be applied, primarily by quantitative methods of analysis, to improve the efficiency of the design of communication systems in complex social, business, industrial and institutional settings and organizations.

Theatre and Performance Studies
The Theatre and Performance Studies emphasis is designed for the generalist, emphasizing application and creativity, but always with regards to an understanding of theatre history; theoretical, critical and analytical systems; and social and cultural forces. Each year, theatre students have the opportunity to participate in four to six theatrical presentations, both on and back stage.
