DESCRIPTION:Karina Hean’s drawings revel in the visual pleasure of momen
 ts in the landscape and a connection with place, both real and invented.  
   Many of the drawings describe structures, which bracket or support organ
 ic masses; a reference to nature’s order, seen specifically in mineral s
 tructures.  The contained, roiling, and often chaotic subjects appear as l
 iving storms, momentarily suspended.  Selecting, recombining, and embellis
 hing specimens from nature’s complexity interests me as a means to prese
 nt emotional metaphors while also enjoying the beauty of light, form, and 
 land.  These imagined landscapes are un-traversable spaces but are drawn f
 rom moving through and observing nature daily.
 
Artist Karina Noel Hean
  is based in Santa Fe, NM and teaches at the Santa Fe University of Art an
 d Design.  She has served on the faculty at the University of Montana, For
 t Lewis College, and New Mexico State University and holds a BA from St. J
 ohns College, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from Studio Art Centers Int
 ernational, and an MFA from New Mexico State University.  Karina works as 
 the Associate Sales & Gallery Director at Selby Fleetwood Gallery, has wor
 ked with SITE Santa Fe in exhibitions and education, and Maryland Hall for
  the Creative Arts as the Visual Arts Coordinator.
