Absent: Harry Heil, Martha Violett, Jessica Young, Kevin Nelson

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 3:35 p.m.

Approval: The minutes from the April 16, 2009 meeting and the September 3, 2009 agenda were approved.

Old Business:

First Year Experience for Students – The committee reviewed the concepts for a first year experience class for incoming students. The class could incorporate study skills, time management and adjustment from high school to college. The committee will explore this more throughout the year and faculty members should discuss this within their departments.

New Business:

Welcome to New Members - The committee members welcomed Anthony Miccoli to the committee. The Student Government Association will be appointing a representative to the committee.

Academic Appeal - Dates were scheduled for the fall term. Thursday, December 3rd during the regular meeting time, the committee will hear suspension appeals for student wishing to return a semester early.  Additionally, the committee agreed to meet on Thursday, January 7th at 9:00 a.m. to hear appeals for student suspended in December.

Committee Direction - Academic Policies Committee Direction for 2009-2010 will be advising loads and first year experience.

Scribe Duties – Anthony Miccoli volunteered to act as scribe for the committee.

Updated Policy Manual – The academic policy manual has been updated and posted on the web.

Miscellaneous Subjects to Discuss This Year – 

1) A clear policy on who can get student Advising Registration Codes (ARC).

2) Should students be required to declare a major?

3) Should students on probation be required to take a course to aid in success and retention or is this focusing on the wrong group of students?
