John Sowell, Vice President for Academic Affairs
John Sowell,
a Professor of Biology, joined the Western faculty in 1991. He came to
Western after serving six years as a faculty member at Southwest State
University in Minnesota. His B.S. is in botany from the University of
California, Davis and his Ph.D. is in biological sciences from the
University of
Idaho. His research explores the physiological responses of plants to
extreme environments. Included in his publications is the book Desert Ecology: An Introduction to Life in
the
Arid Southwest published in 2001 by the University of Utah
Press.
He joined Western's administration in 2000 as Associate Vice
President for Academic Affairs and was named
Vice President for Academic Affairs in March, 2002. As Vice President
for Academic Affairs he has responsibility for all
academic programs, registration services, academic
advising, the library, institutional research,
service learning, sponsored programs and grants, and extended studies.
He serves on the Colorado Department of Higher Education's Academic
Council and
GE-25 Council and in June 2007 was appointed to Governor Ritter's P-20
Education Coordinating Council.
